Why We Chose Port Orleans Riverside
We absolutely loved staying at Disney’s Port Orleans Resort – Riverside during our recent Walt Disney World vacation. We celebrated my sister’s wedding in Hilton Head Island. Afterward, we packed up the car with our golden retriever, Finn. We then headed to Disney World for a magical few days during the week of Thanksgiving.
This resort holds special meaning for our family. Both my parents and my boyfriend’s parents honeymooned here. This makes our stay a wonderful full-circle moment.
Bringing Your Dog to Disney World: Port Orleans Riverside Pet-Friendly Rooms
This was our first time bringing our dog to Disney World, and choosing a pet-friendly resort made all the difference. We arrived around 6:00 p.m. and were instantly charmed by the beautiful lobby.
Pro tip: While Disney offers mobile check-in, I highly recommend checking in at the front desk when traveling with pets. You’ll get to enjoy the stunning Christmas decorations and get a welcome package for your furry friend!
Finn’s welcome package included:
- Roll of poop bags with holder
- Water bowl
- Food mat
- Collar tag
- “First Visit” button

Best Room Types for Dogs at Port Orleans Riverside
If you’re bringing your dog and plan to use a crate, book a King Bed room for ideal floor space. We were fortunate to get:
- A newly renovated room
- Corner location near stairs and elevator (perfect for quick dog walks)
- Easy access to designated pet relief areas
The resort provides clear maps of designated dog bathroom areas at check-in. This makes it easy to set up a routine with your pet.

Port Orleans Riverside Renovated Rooms: Princess and the Frog Theme
The renovated rooms beautifully incorporate Princess and the Frog theming inspired by the New Orleans setting. The design strikes the perfect balance – enough Disney magic to feel special without being overwhelming. It’s exactly what you want when staying at Disney World!
Best Friends Pet Hotel: Convenient Dog Daycare Near Port Orleans

On our first full day, we utilized Best Friends Pet Hotel, located right across from the resort. The process was seamless:
- Easy drop-off and pick-up
- Full-day care while we enjoyed the parks
- Finn loved it!
- We received a “play and stay report card” at the end of the day
Why You Should Take a Midday Resort Break
On our second day, we visited EPCOT in the morning. We then returned to the resort for a midday break. This was something we’d never done before. This was the highlight of our trip! I was surprised by how refreshed we felt. Plus, we got to walk Finn around the resort, and he became quite the celebrity!

Morning Routine
As an early riser, I treasured the peaceful mornings at the resort:
- Exploring the resort gift shop
- Grabbing coffee and Mickey waffles
- Admiring the breathtaking Christmas decorations
- The lobby Christmas tree was absolutely stunning – I’ll dream about it for years!

Don’t Miss: Beignets at Port Orleans French Quarter
On checkout morning, I walked over to the Port Orleans French Quarter side for fresh beignets – they were delicious! The walk is short and scenic, taking you past colorful buildings that capture the New Orleans charm. If you’re staying at Riverside, this is a must-do.
Final Thoughts: Our Favorite Disney World Resort
While I hope to eventually stay at all Disney World resorts, Port Orleans Riverside is definitely my favorite so far. It combines family history, pet-friendly amenities, beautiful theming, and a convenient location. I’m already looking forward to visiting this resort again.
Perfect for: Families, couples, pet owners, Princess and the Frog fans, guests wanting a moderate resort with deluxe touches
